The Bay of Cabo San Lucas: find your bearings
Cabo San Lucas Bay brings together the marina, Médano Beach and the rock formations of Land’s End at the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula. A beach day, a sightseeing boat ride and a guided underwater outing can all start around the bay, but they involve different access, conditions and amounts of time.
For a visual route through its familiar landmarks, start with nine sights and experiences around Cabo San Lucas Bay. This overview explains the setting and practical choices before you choose an outing.

Marina, beach and Land’s End are different places
The marina is the departure and arrival area for many boats, with a waterfront promenade, restaurants and town services nearby. Médano runs along the town side of the bay and has public beach access points, resorts, beach clubs and water-sports operators. The rocky Land’s End headland lies across the water.
The Arch, Lovers Beach, Neptune’s Finger and the sea-lion resting area are landmarks around that headland. They are not all stops that can be reached by walking along Médano. A sightseeing boat may pass several without landing, while a snorkeling or scuba trip uses a site chosen for the activity and conditions.
Choose the experience before choosing the boat
- Sightseeing: ask which formations the route passes and whether any beach landing is intended.
- Beach time: choose the actual beach and access point, with shade, facilities and the return journey in mind.
- Snorkeling: discuss swimming comfort, entry arrangements, supervision and equipment.
- Scuba diving: choose an outing within your training and experience, with the guide selecting an appropriate profile.
- Kayak, paddleboard or other rentals: establish the permitted area and whether instruction or supervision is included.
A short boat crossing does not make an activity suitable for every visitor. Wind, swell, visibility, boat traffic and local restrictions can affect the day. Check what happens if the intended site or landing is unavailable.

Médano’s beach and waterfront scene

Médano combines time on sand with dining and a busy rental scene. Beachfront restaurants offer a place to pause over a meal or drink with views toward Land’s End. Vendors, music and passing activity are part of the setting. Confirm the price and any minimum-spend or seating terms before using a business’s loungers or tables.
Swimming areas must be kept separate from boat approaches and motorized water sports. Ask where bathing is permitted now and check the warning flag. Keep alcohol for after water activities, supervise children closely and do not swim across the bay to reach a landmark.
How deep is Cabo Bay?
Depth varies substantially between shoreline areas, rocky pinnacles, slopes and the underwater canyon. There is no single depth that describes every swimming or dive site. The steep drop-offs discussed by divers are not suggested swimming areas or target depths for a recreational outing.
For a particular dive, ask the operator about the planned maximum depth, entry, route and conditions. A description of a wall extending into deep water does not mean visitors should descend to its base. Use an appropriate chart and qualified local guidance for navigation rather than an undated tourism average.
Marine life and the protected area
Fish, sea birds and the sea-lion resting areas are part of the bay’s appeal. Seasonal wildlife can add to a visit, but neither an animal photograph nor a tour description guarantees an encounter. Keep a respectful distance and avoid feeding, pursuing or touching animals.
The protected area’s formal category is Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Cabo San Lucas. CONANP provides official Cabo San Lucas protected-area information. Cabo Pulmo is a separate East Cape destination, not the reef system containing Neptune’s Finger or Sand Falls in this bay.
Conditions and beach access
Bay-facing coves and exposed Pacific shores have different characteristics. Lovers Beach and Divorce Beach are adjacent but face different water. Do not swim at Divorce Beach, paddle beneath the Arch or enter caves because a photograph makes access look simple. Follow the crew’s chosen route and any local closure.
The municipality’s beach-flag guidance explains the local warnings. Red means no sea entry and black indicates a closure. A calm-looking patch, no visible flag or the bay’s sheltered reputation is not an all-clear.
Planning around your available time
If arriving on a cruise, include the ship-to-shore transfer and the required return to the tender point in your plan. If starting in town, confirm the exact marina dock or beach meeting place. Bring water, sun protection and the items required for the chosen activity. Leave enough flexibility to enjoy the waterfront if conditions change an outing.
