What is a glass-bottom kayak?
A glass-bottom kayak lets you look through a viewing panel while you paddle. It is still a kayak that you propel and control, rather than a sightseeing boat. Our Cabo kayaking overview introduces the wider paddling options; this page explains the equipment and viewing experience.
A panel, a clear hull or a glass-bottom boat?
Tour listings sometimes use “glass bottom,” “clear kayak” and “transparent” loosely. Ask what the actual craft looks like. A kayak with a small viewing panel is different from a fully transparent hull, and both differ from a passenger boat with a glass viewing section.

If you want a seated motorboat ride rather than paddling, check that the product is a boat excursion. Similar wording in a listing does not mean the same effort, seating or boarding arrangements.
Compare shared and private-guided kayak outings. Confirm the viewing-panel design and craft supplied for your departure.

What can you see through the bottom?
Fish, rocks and habitat may be visible when the water, depth and light allow. Surface movement, reflections, bubbles and a marked or cloudy panel can limit the view. Do not expect every part of the route to look like a clear underwater photograph.
Keep the kayak away from rocks and sensitive habitat. A viewing panel is not a reason to paddle onto a reef, approach wildlife or stop in a boat route. Look when it is appropriate without losing track of your group and surroundings.
Does the panel replace snorkeling?

Viewing from the kayak and entering the water are different activities. Some trips combine both, but snorkeling needs suitable conditions, equipment, supervision and a plan for securing and returning to the kayak. Do not jump out simply because you spot fish below.
Our glass-bottom kayak tour guide covers how to check the actual itinerary and inclusions. Staying on the kayak may be possible on some trips, but confirm this before booking if it is essential to you.
Will you stay dry?
Expect the possibility of wet feet, paddle drips, spray and a wet seat. Beach boarding or a capsize can mean getting wetter. Wear clothing suited to the activity and protect belongings for immersion, rather than relying on a “view without swimming” description to mean a dry ride.
Is it suitable for beginners or children?
A viewing panel does not make a kayak automatically safer or more suitable than another design. Fit, loading, flotation, the route, conditions and support matter. Minimum ages and participation requirements belong to the specific product; they are not one rule for all glass-bottom kayaks.
If the Arch is your goal, read whether an Arch kayak trip fits your ability and discuss any concerns with the provider. Tell them about paddling experience, swimming ability and the sizes needed for your group.
Photography and care of the equipment
Secure your camera or phone before launch. Good water clarity and a clean viewing surface can help, but no time or season guarantees a clear underwater shot. Follow the provider’s instructions for handling the kayak and cleaning its panel, and avoid standing or loading gear on it.
